When I think I have picked all the beans on one side of the trellis, I walk around to the other side, but once there, in plain view, through the wire mesh, I see beans that I missed! This is not the first time this has happened. It seems that no matter how thorough I think I have been, this is my experience when harvesting green beans.

Would it be easier if I planted wax beans instead of green beans? For, like yellow squash, they would stand out against the green leaves. I have to look closely to spot zucchini, too. I continue picking, noticing that some of the beans are beginning to be bumpy with seeds while others are thin and tender. Obviously, I missed some when I was last here. Is it that even if I am attentive, there is always more? I continue pondering as I close the gate behind me and head toward the house.

Yes, I eventually conclude, there is always something to harvest. If I just open my eyes.

Whether I call it setting an intention, being vigilant, or “rummaging for God,” I must make a deliberate effort to see.

The harvest awaits.

What is hidden in the garden of your daily life? What is beckoning you to take a closer look?
